Savannah’s Waterfront is thrilled to host this year’s Independence Day Celebration on Monday, July 4th. The event is free and open to the public.

The 3rd Infantry Division Bands will be performing from 6:30pm until 9:45pm. Based at Fort Stewart in Hinesville, Ga., members of the Brass Band, Rock Band and Show Band will play on Rousakis Riverfront Plaza. The finale is the 40-piece U.S. Army Concert Band that has delighted audiences around the world since its inception in 1943.

The annual Independence Day Fireworks Show begins at 9:15pm and is expected to last
about 20-22 minutes. Spectators on the waterfront can bring chairs and blankets; however, coolers are discouraged. This year the show will be produced from a barge in the middle of the Savannah River on the west end of River Street. Our hope is that this new barge site will provide the best visibility all along the waterfront.

River Street will close to vehicular traffic at approximately 5:30pm. Those vehicles parked
on the ramps and in the lots will need to remain there until after the fireworks show. Also, half of parking lot #3 will be closed on Friday morning, July 1st and Monday morning, July 4th to allow for equipment and portable toilet deliveries.

There will be several opportunities to celebrate our nation’s birthday on Savannah’s
Waterfront all weekend long, including live entertainment at Plant Riverside District and
dinner and drink specials at many waterfront restaurants. Merchants are looking forward to greeting guests as they enjoy the many shopping and dining options along the waterfront over the holiday weekend.

All City of Savannah parking garages will be offering a flat rate of $10 per day beginning
Friday, July 1st at 5pm through the weekend until 5am on Tuesday, July 5th
. Metered
parking will be free on July 4th. Also, $5 parking will be offered at the Savannah Convention Center but the facilities inside the building will not be available.

Savannah’s Waterfront wishes to thank the sponsors of this year’s show: Bud Light, City of
Savannah, Dub’s Pub, Plant Riverside District, Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce,
Savannah Hilton Head International Airport, Visit Savannah, and all of the Friends of the Fireworks.

Sip ‘N Shop Soiree

THE QUEEN OF SUMMER READING RETURNS…

Andrews kicks off the season with THE NEWCOMER (St. Martin’s Press; hardcover), a fish out of water tale about a woman who may be in over her head following the suspicious death of her younger sister who left behind a daughter, a “go-bag” full of cash, and a cryptic message about where to flee in the event of her death.

“If anything bad happens to me—it’s Evan. Promise me you’ll take Maya and run. Promise me.” These words haunt Letty Carnahan as she flees New York City with her niece Maya after discovering her sister’s murdered body. Letty has no further information about what she is running from and why. One thing she is certain of? Who she is running from: Tanya’s ex, sleazy real estate entrepreneur Evan Wingfield. She knows in her gut that Evan is somehow responsible for Tanya’s death.

Tanya was a woman shrouded in mystery and secrets, so it is no wonder to Letty that her one clue about where to go is a faded old magazine article about a sleepy mom-and-pop motel in a Florida beach town with the improbable name of Treasure Island. The Murmuring Surf Motel, knowns as The Surf to regulars, is the winter home of a close-knit flock of retirees and snowbirds who don’t particularly care for newcomers. Exhausted and desperate with nowhere else to turn, Letty makes a deal with the motel’s owner and settles into the old storage room. As she tries to unravel her sister’s shady past, care for her grieving niece, and figure out what to do next, she must keep a low profile, particularly around the owner’s suspicious (and handsome) son Joe, who is also a local police detective. With danger closing in, it’s a race to find the truth and right the wrongs of the past.

The Greening of Savannah

I, like so many of you are really disappointed that our St Patrick’s Day festivities have been canceled again this year due to COVID. Don’t get me wrong, I am a firm believer in social distancing and wearing a mask – or two, but we all need a little normalcy back.

So I borrowed this idea from a friend – let’s turn the city of Savannah green for our own little celebration. Green lights decorating homes, shamrocks bouncing off buildings, lamp posts wrapped in St Paddy’s Day green. This is just the first of February – we have time to make this go viral. We can do this. Everyone who comes to Savannah from March 1 – March 17 will smile when they see that we not only turn Forsyth Fountain green but the whole city.
